Joseph Sweeny

Joseph C. Sweeny, 68, of Upper Chichester passed away on Friday, February 9th at his home.

He was born in Chester and raised in Upland where he attended Our Lady of Charity grade School and later went on to attend Collingdale High School.  Joe was a veteran of the US Navy with whom he served as a communications specialist aboard the USS Forrestal during the Vietnam War.  Upon his discharge from the Navy, he went on to be come a painter and member of the District Council 21.

He was a multi-sport athlete who especially excelled in Football.  He also enjoyed his time as a football coach for both the Upland AC and Chichester Crusaders.  Joe was an avid sports fan, especially of the Eagles.  He also enjoyed gardening and caring for his dog, Shady.

He was predeceased by his parents William B. and Sarah Jane Sweeny; brothers, William B. “Lurch” Sweeny, and Albert Sweeny.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, AnnMarie Sweeny; sons, Charles Joseph Sweeny (Chrystal), and Joseph Albert Sweeny; grandchildren, Joe Joe and Rosalie; brother, Michael B  Sweeny.

His funeral service will be held on Friday, February 16th at 12pm at the Joseph A. Ward Funeral Home 1459 Market St. Linwood, PA 19061.  Friends and family are invited to his viewing from 11am-12pm.  Burial will be private.

  1. Annemarie & family I’m so sorry for your loss I’m just seeing this first the 1st time. They were the best Neighbors I believed we ever had back when Huddle ave was the place to live. We had so much fun on that street everyone was like family
    they gave me my 1st babysitting job. The world lost a great man I’m sorry again for not reaching out sooner love & miss you all

  2. I am so sorry to learn Joe has passed away. The last I saw Joe it was perhaps 1968 in Upland when his family lived on Front street. Knew the family very well. I use to be his brother Alberts best friend for years. Truly miss them all. Nothing but good memories.

  3. My sincere condolences to the we family of Joe. I remember him fondly from our days at OLC and Collingdale High School.May he rest in peace.
