Mattie Hurst

December 4th, 2025

The world dimmed when Mattie, 81, slipped from our arms and into eternity on November 18, 2025. Heaven has become considerably brighter now that it has gained those beautiful blue eyes that could outshine any sunrise.  Born on August 31, 1944 in Sharon Hill, Pa she was the daughter of Walter Shepherd and Ethel Davis. Mattie held a deep love for her brother, Walter Shepherd, affectionately known as Sheppie. She treasured every FaceTime with him and her dear sister-in-law, Ruby.

In 2009, Mattie left her home in Delaware and returned to Pennsylvania to live closer to family. Her daughter Brenda, welcomed her and devoted herself to ensuring Mattie always felt safe, cared for, and surrounded by love. Brenda was not only her daughter but the source of so many of Mattie’s happiest memories. Her son Donald (Missy) was forever on her mind. She especially loved the flowers he sent, which she proudly displayed on her window sill. Mattie quickly became the cherished roommate of her eldest grandchild, Fabiana (Ronald). For sixteen years, the two grew up and grew older together, sharing laughter, late night chats, inside jokes, and more love than any one household was ever prepared for.

A hairdresser by trade, she was petite in size but enormous in sweetness. Mattie’s charm came partly from her gentle spirit and partly from the steady supply of sugary snacks she kept within arm’s reach. A lifelong enthusiast of anything chocolate, she never turned down a Reese’s cup or a hug. If you offered both, you immediately became her favorite person.

Mattie had a magical ability to make even the toughest days softer. She was the queen of confidence boosting, quick with a “You’re pretty” or an “I love your outfit,” that could lift anyone’s spirits. She thoroughly enjoyed visits from family and friends. The highlights of her days were spent with her grandchildren and her four great grandchildren who all filled her with laughs and entertaining quality time. Mattie leaves behind a legacy of kindness, humor, and gentle love. Her hugs, her soft voice, and her endless sweetness will forever warm the hearts of those who were lucky enough to be loved by her.
