Tony Chieffo, of Claymont, age 76, beloved father and husband, departed this life peacefully on May 16, 2010, after a nearly year-long battle with brain cancer.

Originally of Marcus Hook, PA, Tony was the youngest of six children born in Marcus Hook, PA to Giuseppe and Antoinette Patrone Chieffo of Bagnoli Irpino, Italy. He graduated from Eddystone High School in 1951 and served two years in the U.S. Army in England during the Korean Conflict. In 1959 he married his high school sweetheart, Martha Blaier. Tony was employed at the American Viscose Corp. in Marcus Hook, PA and then as an inspector at the Sunoco oil refinery in Marcus Hook for 26 years; he was a lifetime member of Immaculate Conception of Lourdes Catholic church in Marcus Hook.

Known informally as Mr. Fix-It throughout his extensive family and neighborhood, Tony could often be seen mowing others’ lawns and clearing their snow, and was frequently engaged in any kind of home-improvement or home-repair project imaginable. He will always be remembered for his compassion and overwhelming generosity and devotion to his immediate and extended family.

He leaves behind his wife Martha Blaier Chieffo of nearly 51 years, daughter Lisa Chieffo and son-in-law Joachim Piprek, son Anthony, and faithful dog Sadie, who accompanied Tony on regular morning walks. Tony is also survived by three sisters, Concetta Dennis of Marcus Hook, Josephine (Joe) Caramanico of Aston, PA and Mary (Sam) Starrantino of Linwood, PA, his brother Benjamin (Ann) Chieffo of Wilmington, DE. dozens of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and -nephews, cousins, and many long-time friends.

The family extends sincere thanks to the caring staff of Foulk Manor North for making Tony’s final days more comfortable.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10am Thursday at the Immaculate Conception of Lourdes Catholic church in Marcus Hook. Burial will follow in Lawn Croft Cemetery Linwood. Family and friends are invited to visit Wednesday evening after 7pm and after 8:30am Thursday at the Ward Funeral Home, 1459 Market St., Linwood 19061.

Donations in memory of Tony may be sent to Anthony’s Workshop, Chimes of Delaware (514 Interchange Blvd., Newark, DE 19711), or to the Delaware Humane Association (701 A St., Wilm., DE 19801).
