Leonard J. Swinick, 87, of Chester died Thursday August 12, 2010 at the Wallingford Nursing Home. Born to John and Maryann Patro Swinick in Chester, where he was reared and educated.
He was a truck driver for Porier Distributors for many years. He was also a member of the Teamsters Local 830, the Polish American Club and the West-End Boat Club.
Leonard loved to read and was an avid baseball fan who loved to listen to the Phillies on the radio. A member of the former St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in Chester, and later Resurrection Parish, he was also a veteran of the U.S. Army during WWII where he was the recipient of the Good conduct medal, American Campaign Medal and a WWII Victory Medal.
In addition to his parents he was also predeceased by two brothers Edward and Frank Swinick and one sister Ida Zakrzewski; 1 grandson Thomas Stacy. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy McAtee Swinick; 4 Daughters Virginia Swinick, Judith Talyai, Eileen Toole, Mary McCleaft; 2 Sons, Leonard Swinick Jr. and Joseph Swinick; 8 grandchildren, Julia and Richard Talyai, Genevieve Toole, Danielle Swinick, Adam Swinick, James, Jessica and Dyan McCleaft; many nieces and nephews.
His funeral service will be celebrated 11am Tuesday August 17th at the Ward Funeral Home, 1459 Market St., Linwood where there will be calling from 10 to 11. Burial will follow in SS Peter & Paul Cemetery, Marple Township.
