August 7th, 2015
Catherine “Katie” A. Stevens, 63, of Wilmington, DE, formerly of Marcus Hook, PA, died peacefully at home on Friday August 7, 2015. She was predeceased by her husband, Chauncey “Butch” Stevens, her two sons, Scott Matthew Stevens and Sean Michael Stevens, and her parents, Bob and Dot Walker. She is survived by her daughter, Stephanie Corsetti (Brian), sister and lifelong best friend, Karen Ward, sisters, Lois Rolph (Pat) and Kim Hewes (Scott), niece, Lauren Waters (Onaris), 5 grandchildren, and many other nieces and nephews.
Katie spent her life taking care of everyone around her, not only at home, but also in her career as a nurse. After the death of her husband in 1980, she started the first hospice in the tri-state area out of Sacred Heart Hospital. Hospice care and providing a comfortable, peaceful way for individuals with terminal illnesses to die became her passion and shaped the rest of her career until she stopped working in 1997. As a result of her tireless drive to provide families with compassionate and quality nursing care, Katie won several nursing awards, with the highlight being the Nightingale Award of Pennsylvania. Even after having to stop working in 1997 due to her health, Katie continued to volunteer for hospice programs on many levels.
Katie was fiercely devoted to her family and friends. She was “Mom”, “Me-mom”, “Baba”, “Baba Katie”, “Aunt Katie” — any of which could be heard in her house on a daily basis as she always surrounded herself with those she loved. Her absolute pride and joy were her 5 grandchildren – Jordan, McKenna, Ashlynn, Shalynn, and Braelynn. She spent almost every day with at least one or more of them. She was extremely proud of her children, Sean and Stephanie, and took great pleasure in being able to tell anyone who would listen of their many accomplishments. Katie had a very special bond with all of her nieces, nephew, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Katie stood very firmly in her faith and devotion to the Lord. She was a longtime member of River of Life Church and served as a deaconess, secretary, and choir director for many years. Her faith sustained her through multiple journeys of both tragedy and comedy. Katie lived her life to serve the Lord and it was through her faith that she made every decision about how to live and how to teach others to live.
A viewing will be held on Thursday August 13 from 6pm – 9 pm and Friday August 14 from 10am – 11am. Funeral service will be at the funeral home on Friday August 14 at 11am with burial to follow at Lawncroft Cemetary.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to be made to Delaware Hospice at 16 Polly Drummond Center, 2nd Floor, Newark, DE 19711.
