Bob (Robert) E. Deckman, Sr. – 2/14/2022

February 16th, 2022

Bob (Robert) Edward Deckman, Sr.

Bob Deckman, 82, of Aston and Norristown, PA, passed away on the morning of Monday, February 14, 2022.  He was born to James and Catharine Deckman, on March 16, 1939, in Philadelphia.  He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Margaret Brennan Deckman; his four children, Mary (Jeff) Cox, Susan Deckman, Rob Deckman, and Jay (Kate) Deckman; his grandchildren Rebekah, Chaz, Sara, and Matt; and his great-grandchildren Jayden, Rosie and Madi.

As a youth, Bob enjoyed sports and the Boy Scouts immensely.  He was a catcher for the neighborhood baseball team in Southwest Philly. He enjoyed camping with the family at Chincoteague and coaching with the Norristown Track Club.

Bob met Margaret through her brother John, and after spending time together at the shore, he was hooked.  He would often call it love at first sight.

Bob loved and supported each of his children, often taking on their varied interests as his own.  He would find the time to collect Matchbox cars with Rob, to collect seashells with Sue, to be a cheering band parent for Mary, and as Jay’s coach with the track club.

Family was very important to Bob, and he was also the first person to welcome friends so heartily that they became family themselves.

Bob’s mechanical aptitude was strong and rather well-known, as he would often repair any broken item in the house, or, for that matter, the neighborhood.  When Margaret taught at Little Flower High School, she was always bringing items home that the Sisters needed to have fixed.  His mechanical mind served him well as he worked at Sid Harvey’s and at Deckman Electric.  Later in life, Bob enjoyed working as a courier.

An avid collector, he appreciated all sorts of items, including stamps, Marx trains, Hess trucks, vintage Matchbox cars and Pez dispensers.  His basement in Norristown was akin to a toy museum, complete with display cases to showcase his treasures.

Bob’s best trait, by far, was his friendliness.  With his attitude and his sharp wit, he made everyone grin.  Bob truly made friends at the drop of a hat, wherever he went.  He will be sorely missed by all of his friends and family.

His funeral service will be held on Friday, February 18th at 11:30am at the Joseph A. Ward Funeral Home 1459 Market St. Linwood, PA.  Friends and family are invited to his viewing from 10:30-11:30. Burial will be private.  For those wishing to join the funeral service via Zoom, please use the following credentials in your Zoom app to join at 11:15 on Friday morning.

  1. Bob was a true friend and highly regarded by the staff and youth of the Norristown Track Club, Ntwn PA.

  2. Mr. Deckman was a delightful man who always had a joke or observation to make you smile. He and Mrs. Deckman raised a lovely family. I wish you all the best at this sad time.
