John J. Cohill 86 years old, passed away January 19, 2009 at Riddle Memorial Hospital. Born and raised in Chester to the late Peter James and Sarah Gell Cohill, John was a longtime resident of Linwood section of Lower Chichester. Mr. Cohill was employed by Sun Oil Co. in Marcus Hook retiring after 25 years of employment.
He was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Navy where he served as a gunners mate aboard the Merchant Marine Ship Walter S. Camp which was sunk en route to India near Okinawa and he spent 4 1/2 days on a raft with his shipmates before being rescued by a British Destroyer. He also saw a lot of the world courtesy of the US Navy.
He was a longtime and very active member of the American Legion, VFW and Lions Club, and also the Polish American Club, and Holy Saviour Catholic Church. He was a very kind hearted gentleman and would help anyone who needed his help. Jack enjoyed going to Marcus Hook Park for concerts, and meeting up with friends. He was an avid reader and card player and he enjoyed crossword puzzles, carpentry, coin collecting, very good to his family, and volunteering.
He was predeceased by his parents Peter and Sarah Cohill, his brother Joseph Cohill who died aboard the USS Juneau along with the Sullivan Brothers, and 2 sisters Frances Williams and Sally Tobin.
He is survived by his brother in law Henry V. Tobin, Jr., nephews Joe Williams, Henry V. Tobin, III, and Mark D. Tobin, nieces Georgeann Williams Blank, and Sally Ann Hadley, and cousin Marie Colongo, all of which looked after him.
Family and friends invited to his funeral service Saturday 11am, viewing 10-11am Saturday, Joseph A. Ward Funeral Home, 1459 Market St., Linwood; burial Immaculate Heart of Mary Cemetery.
