John Gilman Stackhouse, 87, of Ridley Park died on Monday, November 15, 2010 at Taylor Hospital. Born in Boston, MA, he served in the US Army, Company C, 291st Engineer Combat Battalion in Normandy France. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for wounds received in that campaign. After convalescence and discharge from the Army Station hospital, Fort Story, VA in 1945 he settled in Prospect Park, PA.
Mr. Stackhouse was then receiving care at the Veteran’s Administration facility in Philadelphia, where he fell in live with the pretty clerk who processed his claims. Gladys Marie Goodwin became his wife in January 1950. John and Gladys bought a house in Ridley Park and raised seven sons. He loved his family, laughed easily, and enjoyed gardening. Gladys, his best friend in life, died in 2005.
He is survived by his sons John and Mark of Glenolden; Wayne, Thomas and Carl of Ridley Park; Paul of Texas and James of Nevada, and their families. John was called grandfather by fifteen children and great-grandfather by eleven.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend his calling at 10am, Monday November 22, 2010 followed by a service at 11am at the Joseph A. Ward Funeral Home, Linwood, PA. Burial will be at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown, PA.
