Edward knew he wanted to be a funeral director at age 10 in the fourth grade in Ms. Casey’s Class at Holy Saviour School, never telling his grandmother or his parents until his junior year in high school that he wanted to go to mortuary school. He achieved the necessary credits at Penn State University and left for Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science in 1979. He excelled and graduated, serving his apprenticeship under the tutelage of his father. Edward passed his National Board exam and was awarded his license in 1981.
On October 24, 1981, Edward married Jennifer Wanner Ward of Marcus Hook. Her family had an established contracting business serving the area, since 1892. Ed continued to learn much from his father and grandmother, who kept a close eye while living upstairs. When his father retired, Ed incorporated the business and changed the name to Joseph A. Ward Funeral Home, Inc.
In early 2002, Ed expanded the parlor and show room and added monogram awnings. The interior was completely redecorated, enhancing the cherished antiques. New furnishings and decorating was completed again in 2010.
