The houses of terrace today were not built yet. In the mid-1940s, only Marshalls Air Field could be seen behind the funeral home. Margaret demolished two garages in the back, which became the parking lot. The driveway circled the building from Hutchinson Street around the back, exiting onto Market Street.
By now, she not only had earned the respect of her fellow professionals, they nominated and elected her as the First Woman Deputy Coroner of Delaware County. In October 1945, she ruled over the death of N.C. Wyeth’s accident. Her name appears in his biography by David Michaelis. Margaret was also elected by her peers as the First Woman President of the Delaware County Funeral Directors Association.
The funeral home was originally a frame structure, requiring a lot of maintenance. In 1966, she added an addition and a garage. The exterior was covered with stucco, and the interior was updated, as needed. Her son, Joseph, becomes a full-time employee. Her daughter, Joanne Hart’s assistance answering the phone was invaluable. Joanne had an additional business line installed in her home. Her self-sacrifice helped provide phone coverage for the funeral home 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
