He later worked at Aldon Rug Mill, for a nickel more an hour, a raise during that era. “Loyal to his mother” he performed the removals, embalmings, dressings and make-up, nights, weekends, and holidays. He also installed carpet on the side with his friend, Mr. Bill Reed.
The Mill Relocated in 1966. By now, the business had grown to where his mother could afford to employ him full-time. Also now, Joe and Eileen had six children. Proficient and skilled in preparing families’ loved ones, he was sought after to subcontract by many other funeral homes. He prepared for Walter Kaneski, Mel Minshall, John Clancey and George White Funeral Homes.
When his mother retired in 1981, Joseph was well prepared and determined to continue his mother’s ways and honor her traditions. It broke his heart but was proud to have the privilege of burying his mother in 1995. Joseph retired in 1993; well-liked and respected in the communities he served. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council in Marcus Hook and belonged to the Lower Delco Lions Club. He was proud to sell the business and real estate to his son, Edward J. Ward. The original building then was over 110 years old!
