All arrangements and directing of funeral services were performed by Margaret. She did have moral support from two of Francis’s friends in the industry, but they were out of state. She had to prove to her fellow professionals and the community that a woman could provide the same services as a man – and more, a woman’s touch.
Hold close to mind and heart that she was caring for her six children, as funerals were held in the family’s home. Her journey was one of both struggle and triumph. From the beginning, two names are immeasurable in the support of Margaret’s success, Father Daniel I. McDermott, of Holy Saviour Parish, and Frank Plank, of Plank Casket Company. Mr. Plank extended credit to Margaret to establish and meet her inventory needs. Margaret became known for understanding families’ financial difficulties, often providing services pro bono, enabling families a dignified burial for their loved ones.
